VIII. BE A PART OF POLITICS IN TORONTO

I. HELP A GOOD CAUSE BY VOTING FOR THE TORONTO GREEN COMMUNITY

They have a program called Lost River Walks, which are guided walks (rain or shine!) to better understand the nature and heritage of our city. In an effort to preserve the knowledge of some of their ageing volunteers, they are trying to digitize the knowledge and history of the city through a GIS mapping service, in addition to revamping their website as an free information resource. In order to do so, they need to raise $15,000.

They have found this opportunity through the Aviva Insurance Company, which is offering small Toronto social groups an opportunity to receive funds needed (known as the Aviva Community Fund). However, in order to be considered, Toronto needs to vote for us.

All they are asking is to vote for them! Each voter can actually vote 10 times – everyday for 10 days, starting on November 15th 2010 till November 25th 2010. All that you have to do is register with your email address and vote. As long as you click the checkbox to receive no notifications, you will never receive an email from Aviva, nor will your information be held. The email addresses are simply required to ensure no cheating or digital voting manipulation, as has happened in the past.

The link to vote is : http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf5874 and the website of our Lost River Walks program is : http://www.lostrivers.ca/

Please support a local initiative by the Toronto Green Community!!

II. ANOTHER GOOD CAUSE – BECOME AN ECOMENTOR IN TORONTO!!

Earth Day Canada’s youth-led education program, EcoMentors, is providing youth aged 15 to 24 the training, support and motivations they need to facilitate environmental workshops in schools and community settings. Help them fulfill volunteer requirements and become youth leaders.

Registration is now open for three FREE EcoMentors training sessions for youth!

III. Engineering Promise to Future Generations – Seminar from the Sustainability Office

On Thursday, November 18, join the Sustainability Office for a Lunch & Learn seminar on the Department of Civil Engineering’s “Promise to Future Generations”. Beginning with engineers, and now expanded to include students, staff, and faculty of all disciplines, this initiative aims to protect the rights of future generations to a productive earth by encouraging thoughtful decision-making. The seminar will take place on November 18 at 12pm at the Sustainability Office, Room 208, South Borden Building.

For more information, contact Kelsey Rose at kelsey.rose@utoronto.ca, or check out http://www.civil.engineering.utoronto.ca/studentlife/promise.htm.

IV. CONTRIBUTE TO BIKE CHAIN!!

An AGM is an important event for a not-for-profit corporation, and
this AGM is your chance to have a say in what Bikechain does and how
it’s been doing it.

Bikechain’s AGM will be held on Thursday, November 18th from
5:30-6:30pm at the UTERN office (thanks UTERN!) in the South Borden
Building, 487 Spadina Ave.

Do you want to help guide Bikechain as an organisation? Come out and
vote for next year’s Board of Directors, or better yet, run to be on
the Board of Directors. You could be part of the governance structure
that is my boss!

Email bikechain@utoronto.ca or check out their website at : http://bikechain.utoronto.ca.
